Abstract
The genus Ulva (Chlorophyta) has an estimated 102 recognized species, and a large number of additional taxonomical identities that include subspecies, varieties and formae. The Levantine basin in the easternmost Mediterranean Sea is a constraining marine environment presenting challenging conditions for marine life, including seaweeds. This talk will present a revision of Ulva species described in the various coastlines of the Levantine eco-region, together with cultivation efforts known for the area. There are tentatively c.a. 18 Ulva species in the Levant, which is remarkably biodiverse compared with the estimated 39 species for the whole Mediterranean Sea. Contrary to frequent blooms seen in recent years for other seaweed species, Ulva has not been reported to do so, except for periods of high productivity, particularly during springtime. |
